hello ladies, gentlemen and everyone else and welcome to day 14 of milkas' expression corner !! today i'll be shortly discussing what makes a good ross design, mainly promo art design ross since bad piggies is pretty inconsistent with its depictions of the titular bad piggy.
but along the way, we'll have to stop a bit and discuss what makes a good minion pig. a good minion pig is meant to look stupid. far apart eyes, paired with a blank, wall-eyed expression and a big schnoz right down the middle. add two little ears positioned based on the size of the pig, little eyebrows sitting flush above the eyes, and that's about it - you got a stupid little fellow ready to serve as cannon fodder in whatever his hamnesty's cooking up!
as for ross, it's a little bit different than that. of course, he's still meant to look like a minion pig, though much more like a silly minion pig who also happens to be stupid, rather than vice versa. though a wall-eyed expression does work, ross will much more often find himself donning a cross-eyed expression instead. it helps complete his derpy look a lot more easily!
his eyes also happen to be a tad closer than those of the average minion pig. he's often seen front facing, and they're both right up to his snout! he's also very often seen with a smile on his face, though that one's not hard to get right - 3 big top teeth and a wide smiling open mouth, and that's all you need! perhaps 3 (or 2 depending on the situation, or preference really) bottom teeth if they look like they'd fit the expression, but he fits well with a slight smile at all times.
speaking of expression, ross is always meant to be very expressive! his face is basically a playground, make him look as fun as possible! he also moves his snout while emoting pretty often, something that most pigs don't really do. when he opens his mouth in any capacity, his snout usually goes up.
it also just generally helps to put him in situations where his snout is high up, he looks more like himself that way, partly due to the fact that he usually does it when surprised, intrigued, or simply happy. his snout may also sometimes move downward when emoting, such as when he's dumbfounded or exasperated.
and lastly, don't forget his iconic freckles! two facing upwards and the middle one downwards on his left cheek, and the opposite on his right!
really, the best tip i can give for a good ross is to truly experiment. ignore any and all boundaries you've set for yourself, don't try to match things up and make him in-line with the rest as that will limit your potential in capturing this deceptively simple design right, just try to follow your heart and do what you think would look right for a silly little piggy such as our lovely little lard of the vehicle-veering variety. you'll get it right if you draw with your heart and all the love you can give the little mess of a hog, you'll touch up the art later if you wanna make it more in-line with your other pigs.
also don't use his in-game (more specifically in-level) design as reference, that's just a regular minion pig with freckles slapped on top.
i hope this helped some people, and perhaps inspired others! everyone needs a little bit of ross art in their life, and i expect to see more people drawing our favorite freckled finch-fugitive soon.
